Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration transformed musical theater when it premiered in 1943. Set in the Territory of Oklahoma in the years before statehood, Oklahoma! joins a sunny romance with the darker story of a community rising up against a reviled outsider. This summer, director Daniel Fish (Rocket to the Moon, SummerScape 2005) creates a boldly intimate chamber production of this beloved classic. Enacting the communal rites of a young nation, actors, musicians, and audience will share one space and break bread together, bound by the songs and dances of Richard Rodgers’s exuberant and complex score.
